Our History

Where it all began.

In 2004, Ronald McDonald House Charities North Australia proudly opened its modern and welcoming Ronald McDonald House next to Townsville University Hospital, providing accommodation for over 100 people each night.

Our mission is to Keep Families Close during the challenging times when a child’s illness turns life upside down.

Our dedicated team of staff and volunteers, supported by the kindness of donors, sponsors, and corporate partners, work tirelessly to deliver our vital programs and services. Together, we strive to ensure families have a safe, supportive space where they can focus on what matters most—being there for their child.

Across Australia

In 1981, the landscape of children’s charities in Australia was transformed with the opening of the first Ronald McDonald House in New South Wales. Since then, RMHC Australia has expanded to 18 Houses, 18 Family Rooms, 5 Family Retreats, 1 Care Mobile, and a National Learning Program. With the support of generous communities, partners, and a dedicated team of staff and volunteers, RMHC Australia now assists over 40,000 families each year.

Around the world

Ronald McDonald House Charities was established in 1974 in Philadelphia, USA, with a clear mission: to offer families of children in hospital a place to rest and recharge away from the clinical environment. Today, RMHC is a global organisation, with 378 Ronald McDonald Houses operating in 62 countries and regions around the world, continuing its mission to support families in need.
